Each individual responds to a treatment in a different way based on his peculiar conditions, genetics, and environment. Treatments work differently on different people. It would help to open up to a close friend or family member, instead of withdrawing oneself and being on guard all the time. One has to spend time on exercise and games which gives a feeling of high. Participating in social and religious activities helps improve mood. Depression does not disappear overnight. One has to slowly work his way out and therefore it would be better if vital decisions pertaining to profession and personal life may waits. Important decisions should always be taken after consultation with near and dear ones, or a counselor.

It is the duty of family and friends to get the patient proper diagnosis and effective healing procedure. Keeping him company and monitoring while he is being administered treatment would be useful. Special care may be given to those who use alcohol and drugs, to maintain abstinence. The patient should be provided constant emotional support, which includes affection and understanding. Patients of depression may be encouraged to be articulate and he may always be given a patient ear. Optimism, hope and a lot of positivism has to be inculcated in the individual and he could be engaged in games, cultural and social activities.

Patients may not easily accept invitations to socialize, and they have to be repeatedly coaxed and convinced. A person suffering from the disorder may or may not mention suicide, and references to suicide are not to be ignored. It is difficult for people around the patient to accept the dramatic changes in his personality, and he may often be blamed for not trying enough. All this has to be deliberately avoided. Cognitive behavioral therapy, rational emotive therapy, interpersonal therapy, psychodynamic approaches etc. are some types of therapeutic approaches used for treatment of patients of depression..
