Fleas are the most annoying and troublesome insects for both humans and their pets. While we can use various products to rid ourselves of fleas, old-fashioned, preventative home remedies relieve us of ever having to have them in the first place.

To prevent fleas, keep your home clean, indoors and outdoors! All the carpets and floors, and all the corners of the house should be thoroughly vacuumed regularly. The kitchen should be cleaned properly, cleaning up food spills and covering all food stuff. A clean home is an unattractive one to fleas! Water is also a breeding place for fleas, so all the leaky pipes should be promptly repaired. In case you need to use pesticides, the natural, less harmful ones, should be used.
Citrus repellent:
You can make an effective flea repellent from lemon by cutting it into quarters and immersing it in boiling water. This is then steeped overnight to get you the repellent. By spraying this all over your pet, especially behind the ears and generally around the head, and also at the base of the tail and the ‘armpits’, you can rid it of fleas.
Yeast And Garlic Powder Wafers
Here is a great product that contains both brewers yeast and garlic powder. It’s one of the easiest home remedies for killing fleas because it comes in wafer form, allowing you to give your pet a “treat”. It’s also available in powder form to sprinkle on your pet’s food.
Another basic home remedy for fleas is the frequent vacuuming of the carpets. This is especially important if your carpet is made of soft material. Make sure that you do it forcefully, fleas really hang on smooth carpets, and they love it.
Diatomaceous earth is a great home remedy that removes the fleas waxy coating and dries them out, which kills them. Caution: Wear a dust mask to avoid the easily inhaled, finely ground diatomaceous earth used in swimming pool filteres; and pennyroyal and tobacco powder in large quantities can be toxic to you.
