Heartburn is known by many names. Indigestion, bloating, borborygmus and dyspepsia are all used to define this condition, which in many cases, occurs after eating. Other symptoms of heartburn include a burning sensation or pressure in the area around the breastbone, mild nausea, and a feeling of fullness in the abdomen. Excessive gas and belching, as well as stomach growling, are additional symptoms. A person suffering from heartburn may also feel pain between the shoulders or in the neck.

Home Remedies for Heartburn

Many find that ingesting ginger with a meal helps to reduce suffering and stomach upset. Fresh ginger can be ground and added to foods or taken in tea or capsule form. Herbalists recommend consuming 500mg. of ginger with a full glass of water after each meal.

Papaya enzymes, which can be purchased in chewable form, also help the digestive process. Taking a papaya pill after a meal can prevent heartburn. Increasing the amount of fiber and water consumed per day is also helpful. Fiber absorbs acids and gas, while water helps rid the body of toxins.

Prepare herbal tea containing equal small amounts of peppermint, chamomile, ginger, licorice root and catnip. Preferably, it should be taken after dinner.

Another one of the home remedies for heartburn is peppermint. Other mints may be useful as well. Peppermint oil is an ingredient in several over the counter heartburn products. Peppermint and other mint oils are included in some heartburn natural remedies. You can grow peppermint in your herb garden. For heartburn relief, you can chew on the washed leaves and stems or add them to your fennel tea.

The juice from the aloe vera plant is another natural home remedy that is used to soothe an irritated esophagus. Although there isn’t any scientific evidence that it might help, aloe vera juice has a long history of use in Europe as a natural home remedy to relive heartburn.

Like slippery elm, the herb marshmallow (Althaea officinalis) contains mucilage, which is thought to coat and soothe the lining of the esophagus. It is another folk remedy that is used for heartburn. Herbalists often recommend marshmallow root tea. It is usually made by adding one tablespoon of the dried root to a cup (8 oz.) of boiling water, steeping it covered for at least 10 minutes, and then straining. Herbalists usually suggest drinking up to three cups a day.

This is a tried and true method of treating heartburn. It may not sound appetizing and let’s face it, it tastes terrible, but it will get rid of your heartburn instantly. Add approximately 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda to a glass of warm water and drink it quickly.
