Bad breath can be very embarrassing and annoying both for the sufferer and for other people as well. If not treated properly, it could interfere with your social life, work life and even your sex life. Many people have the problem but don’t even know it. It’s always a good idea to check your breath from time to time. But what causes this problem?
There are many different factors that contribute to it. According to the American Academy of Periodontology, bad breath or Halitosis is caused by sulphur compounds released from our digestive process by bacteria. Certain kinds of bacteria, called anaerobic bacteria, in the mouth produce volatile sulphur compounds. If these sulphur compounds are left to build up, the result can be bad breath. These anaerobic bacteria live within the surface of the tongue and throat. They break down proteins in food, blood and diseased oral tissue and when they come in contact with certain amino acids in proteins, sulphur compounds are released from the back of the tongue and throat causing the foul breath. The bacteria are referred to as anaerobic bacteria because they thrive when there is little or not oxygen.
Since the source of foul breath is sulphur gas produced by anaerobic bacteria found in the mouth, proper oral hygiene is the most effective treatment for most people. If you suffer from chronic halitosis you may need to see your dentist for advice. Many people can get rid of their bad breath simply by practicing good oral hygiene
Other factors that contribute to bad breath include the following:
- Certain infections and medical conditions
- Dry mouth or xerostomia.
- Some foods such as garlic and onions can make the problem worse.
- Failing to follow a routine of brushing and flossing daily.
- Tobacco use.
Here are some things you can do to prevent, control and eliminate bad breath:
1. Brush and floss your teeth, gums and tongue daily: after every meal, in the morning and before you go to bed.
2. Keep your mouth moist by drinking plenty of water throughout the day.
3. Brush your teeth immediately after eating sulphur-rich foods such as fish, dairy and meat.
